The
Bowl Festival Lineup 2005 |
1pm - HORIZON 22
Horizon 22 are a Hammond organ led jazz/blues quartet from Peck ham who play a rich blend of 1960’s Blue Note inspired grooves with 70’s film soundtrack atmospherics. They were formed in the late 1990’s out of a desire to fuse Hammond organ 60s grooves with 70s film soundtrack atmospherics. They gig regularly throughout London and have appeared at the Jazz Cafe, 333 Club, The Spit and many more. Their debut album is out now on Cyan 22 records. Classic lounge tunes to kick back and chill out to. The groove starts here.
2pm - FARAI
Far ai is an acoustic singer-songwriter from Crystal Palace who has
teamed up with producer Robert ‘The Kill’ Motorman. Their collaboration
fuses Far ai’s South African and raga influences with the Kill’s urban
beats and eclectic guitar to bring an upbeat and urban flavour to
the music. As a child growing up in Zimbabwe, Farai was exposed to
traditional African Music and used to listen to Western music on the
radio. He arrived back in the UK just at the time when ragga was exploding
on to the scene. With this huge influence of styles, Farai returns
to the grass roots of music where lyrics have meaning and songs are
well crafted. He has worked with Aubrey Nunn (bass player from Faithless)
and Tim Clarke (Bassboosa - a signing to Sony Music), and was crowned
Croydon’s best singer-songwriter at the Talent Quest in February this
year. One to watch.
3pm
- KANAKO AND THE NUMBSKULLS
Kanako and the Numbskulls were formed in Bromley in 2004. Their unique
percussion led sound is born from the diverse cultural backgrounds
of its members. Self-branded as ‘Afro Japanese Folk Punk’, their style
celebrates all the colors of the musical spectrum. Kanako, the lead
singer/afro-percussionist is also the songwriter whose storytelling
folk-tinged lyrics are both personal and uplifting. Each member of
‘The Numbskulls’ is carving out their respective careers in the music
world as DJ’s, Producers, Singers and Drummers and, as a band, perform
at least once a month. This band look set for world music domination.

driven beats, created by guitarist Chris Ashok.
5pm
MILK KAN
Milk Kan are three South London geezers who crawled their way up out
of the suburban sewers, with broken guitars in hand, and hip-hop break
beats beaten on their backs. They dragged the noise machine around
the capital, bouncing between venues like Beastie Boyz, screamin’
like poetic preachers, with bluegrass tales and low-fi punk star rhythms.
They've looted the corner shop, jacked the industry of everything,
and danced with the zombies, so play on and play long!!!!! Milk Kan
are: Scrappy Hood The Crunk Preaching Poet on broken guitar; Jimmy
Blade The Slung Drunk guitar Twangler and beat bumper and Loz Vegas
The Animal bangin’ n a shoutin’ behind the raw hide skins.
6pm SHUFFLE
Shuffle are square pegs in today's increasingly round holed music
industry. There are no easy tags to append to this band. An original
fusion of punk, hip-hop, swing jazz and pop just about describes it.
Shuffle was born after Seamus and Monica Yam spent many a night in
candlelit rooms, ears cocked to the sounds coming from the hi-fi,
a little Public Enemy here, a heap of PiL there, with a touch of The
Meters and The Sonics thrown in for good measure. The now 7-piece
band have won XFM’s unsigned band of the week, released 2 EP’s and
supported bass punk legend Jah Wobble. They are currently working
on a double A-side single release from their own label, Bloodlust
- and you can catch them DJing at the Secret Garden Festival next
month as well as at their regular Shuffle club night at Brick Lane’s
93 Feet East.
7pm
LIBERATION JUMPSUIT
Liberation Jumpsuit are three South West London guys who use keyboards,
turntables, guitar, synths and FX to create electro-beats for the
masses. Hosting legendary ‘Picnic’ nights at all kinds of weird venues
throughout the UK, this trio are also well known for their own unique
brand of visual projections. Formed in 2002, Liberation Jumpsuit secured
a residency at Bar Ginglik, the suburban beat-bunker under Shepherd’s
Bush Green. Under these roofs they compiled their first collective
album, “Rhythms You Lik”, and with the help of Dr. Alex Paterson [the
Orb], they hatched from their nest and launched a full-scale tour
supporting acts such as: Andy C, Aphrodite, Atomic Hooligan [Botchit
& Scarper] and Cylob [Rephlex]. Liberation Jumpsuit are more than
just another group of heads nodding behind laptops though they do
admit to being guilty to a fair bit of the above and yes, jumpsuits
are involved. Move it!

venues such as The Borderline, Cargo, The Barfly, 93 Feet East and
The Metro Club, along with recent dates in Ireland and Germany. Electric
Superhighway, the first UK single release from their debut album,
was produced by modern rock maestro and Muse producer Paul Reeve,
and was released as a three track CD single earlier this year. To
accompany the single, a Video Shoot for Electric Superhighway took

THE RAYS
Rabble Rousers The Rays rehearse, perform and live in Crystal Palace.
This autumn they will be busy unleashing their eclectic sounds onto
the soil of Eastern Europe after the release of their first single
‘Billy Big Muscles’. The Rays have previously played alongside last
years Bowl performers ‘The Ludes’, and promise an onslaught of entertainment
with a style that swings from ska to rock to ballads…and back again.
Songwriter James injects a touch of comical wisdom into his lyrics
so expect to be entertained.
4pm
VIPER SQUADRON
Formed by First Gunner Julian Butler in 2003, Viper Squadron quickly
established ViperHQ, a base at a secret location in Crystal Palace.
Julian Butler writes songs about the world as he sees it: alien invasions,
android girlfriends, zombies who just want to boogie and ghosts that
won’t leave his guitar alone. Viper Squadron have released two singles,
‘Computers Are Taking Over The World’ and ‘The Bells Of Christmas
/ Robot Girl’, a free double A-side given away to baying fans at their
